Photography101: Mystery & Light

Here is my first attempt to edit a shot to present two versions of it. I am not as adept at using lights, but I hoped to create a sense of mystery with the darkened version of a shot I took of a clubhouse swimming pool that was ablazed with Christmas lights. I thought that darkening, and using a stronger contrast and higher saturation of colors would get the effect of mystery I wanted, at the same time hide the fact I wasn’t able to capture the glitter in those Christmas lights.

An air of mystery surrounds the clubhouse swimming pool...

Then, I lightened the shot by softening the contrast and brightening it more…the effect is indeed a dramatic contrast with the ‘air of mystery’ in the darkened version.

The lighter version somehow brought more life to the Christmas lights as they cast their dancing reflections onto the water...
